	Seeking useful and exotic resources, expeditions of discovery brought astronomers, navigators and cartographers to the New World. They were the ones who introduced applied scientific research here.

Science was initially a tool of discovery, but by the 19th century it became an instrument for controlling and exploiting resources, and was taught in schools and universities.

More recently, with space research and computers, science and technology are gradually converging with social issues, in the fields of medicine and communications.
