Transportation and Communications

On the right track!

In a province covering close to 1.7 million km², with nearly 3% of the world's renewable freshwater reserves, transportation and communications are vital considerations.

A number of Quebec museums house and showcase original and ingeniously efficient ways of getting around and transporting goods and people.

Schooners and steamers, lakers and trans-Atlantic ships replaced the barques and canoes that were once indispensable to the Indian and French communities of the New World.

To conquer distances: trains and ships, snowmobiles and supersonic planes.

To reach children: a train-school shuttling among Quebec villages in the 19th century.

To become more efficient: buildings and instruments for navigation, lighthouses and beacons, motorized vehicles for water and snow, vehicles to conquer space, to explore the unknown and to carry troops into battle.
