On April 25, 2012, the Honourable Rob Moore presented, on behalf of the Governor General of Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to the Executive Director of the Société des musées québécois (SMQ), Mr. Michel Perron:
“For the work he has carried out on behalf of Québec’s museums and his many years of dedication as Director of the Société des musées québécois.”
Awarded during the 65th National Conference of the Canadian Museums Association, the Diamond Jubilee Medal was also presented to 38 museum professionals, including 10 from Québec.
This commemorative medal was created as part of the 2012 celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. Its presentation recognizes the generosity and dedication of all those who make extraordinary efforts for the well-being of their communities.
The Société des musées québécois received a Prix Coup d’Éclat! from Festivals et Événements Québec and the Société des Attractions Touristiques du Québec for the production of its brochure L’Expérience musée pour découvrir le fleuve Saint-Laurent.

The SMQ won an Award of Outstanding Achievement in the Publications category for Musées à découvrir – Guide des musées du Québec. Available in French and English, the guide stood out for its originality and its effective use of resources. This 248-page publication, with its highly contemporary graphic design and abundant illustrations, aims to better position museums on the national and international stage and, ultimately, to increase tourist influx.
An exceptional reference work for cultural tourism, the guide showcases the museum offering while revealing, through the richness of its images and texts, the distinctive artistic, historical, and scientific heritage found within. In total, it presents 300 destinations in museums, exhibition centres, and interpretation sites across Québec. The creators sought to move beyond the idea of a simple directory listing all museums. They innovated by producing a work designed as a practical tourist guide, enabling both travel planners and culture enthusiasts to learn more about Quebec and easily plan their visits according to the chosen region and fields of interest.
It is part of the strategies that the SMQ implemented with the project Development and Commercialization of the Tourist Offering of Quebec Museums. The SMQ extends its thanks to the entire production team as well as its partners: Canada Economic Development for Québec Regions, the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Ministère du Tourisme, and Télé-Québec. It also warmly thanks all of its member museums.
The SMQ received the The Best in Heritage award, presented by Europa Nostra and ICOM, for the creation of the website Musées à découvrir, launched in 2002.
The award is presented at the annual The Best in Heritage conference, which aims to highlight best practices in the museum and heritage fields.
The SMQ received the Web’Art Silver Award for the Musées à découvrir website at the Festival of International Audiovisual & Multimedia Patrimony (F@IMP) in 2004, in Taiwan.
F@IMP is organized by AVICOM, ICOM's International Committee for Audiovisual and New Technologies and Social Media. F@IMP is an international professional event aimed at showcasing museum achievements that make use of new image and sound technologies. The Festival is a competition judged by an international jury of specialists. As a travelling event, it is hosted in conjunction with the annual meeting of the AVICOM Committee and the international symposium held on that occasion.
