Presented as part of the 50th anniversary of the Musée de Charlevoix, the exhibition Objects of Memory is a journey back through more than five decades of collecting. It reveals some of the many memories tucked way in the Museum’s archives.

The exhibition offers a glimpse behind the scenes.

Every object in a museum has a story to tell. About an individual or family. About daily life or traditional skills. About the artists and collectors who have shaped the community. Each one is a repository of memory, but in a moveable, evolutive way, reconstructing our relation to the past over time. The way we choose to display an object, name it, and place it in context shapes the narrative we derive from it—and thus the memory we retain of it. In this sense, every exhibition is an act of remembrance. Presented as part of the 50th anniversary of the Musée de Charlevoix, the exhibition Objects of Memory is a journey back through more than five decades of collecting. It reveals some of the many memories tucked way in the Museum’s archives—the surprising objects collected by Roland Gagné, the exceptional legacy of folk art donated by Pierre and Véronique Riverin, the works by Charlevoix folk painters painstakingly assembled by Patrick Morgan and Maud Cabot, and so much more—a whole world that delights the eye and tantalizes the mind. The exhibition also offers a glimpse behind the scenes: How does an object become part of a museum’s collection? What happens once it has been acquired?
