For many years, the Symmes Inn Museum has received donations of objects that have marked the history and heritage of the former City of Aylmer.
Collection of silverware and Limoges porcelain.
The exhibition is divided into two sections: SILVERWARE: Over the years, thanks to the generous contributions of donors, the Museum has been able to build up a collection of silverware, many of which tell their own story. Here we present a few of them. VICTORIAN-INSPIRED TABLEWARE: Limoges porcelain is made from hard-paste porcelain and is considered the finest in the world. It has three very specific characteristics. First, the quality of the kaolin discovered near Limoges, France, an essential material for the production of this ceramic. Secondly, the superb glaze produced by an intense firing process gives it its exquisite translucency. Finally, the expertise of French artisans makes this porcelain unique. This collection of Limoges porcelain belonged to the family of Dr. Coller Munsell Church, a physician in Aylmer in the second half of the 19th century. The set comes from the Bawo & Dotter Company, based in New York. In the early 1870s, the company founded “Elite Works” in Limoges to manufacture and decorate its porcelain.
