The Haut-Richelieu: Treasures of water, earth and fire

The exhibition emphasizes key objects that constitute essential points of entry into an understanding of the history of the Haut-Richelieu region and of Québec ceramics. Rare and significant works are presented, including the well-known blue porcelain service and the monumental Silsby fire pump, which stand as important cultural artifacts.

This exhibition explores ceramics and the history of the Haut-Richelieu through a cultural mediation approach rooted in the territory and its narratives. The first section focuses on ceramic production in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, offering an overview of the knowledge, techniques, and uses associated with this practice. The objects on display serve as privileged witnesses to everyday life and help illustrate the role of ceramics in the region’s industrial and cultural development. The second section broadens the perspective by guiding visitors through the history of the Haut-Richelieu. Each municipality within the territory is presented through chronological markers, significant objects, and key moments that shaped its evolution. By bringing material heritage and regional history into dialogue, the exhibition encourages a renewed view of the past and supports the understanding, transmission, and appropriation of collective memory
