About the museum

Welcome to the Musée des Abénakis ! Founded in 1965 by the Abenaki community and housed in the former Odanak Catholic school, on the banks of the Saint-François River, this is the oldest Aboriginal Museum in Quebec. It's also your chance to explore the many facets of the rich and authentic material and intangible heritage of the Abenaki First Nation, and learn about its thousands of years of history.

Take part in the living transmission of W8banaki culture in an Indigenous museum rooted in its territory.

The Musée des Abénakis is the first Indigenous museum institution in Québec. Founded in 1965 by the Abenaki community, it is a place of memory, transmission, and connection, rooted in the heart of Odanak. It shares the story of a millennia-old culture that is still vibrant today, carried by the voices, knowledge, and lived experiences of the W8banaki Nation. Housed in the former Catholic school overlooking the Saint-François River, the Museum has become a leading cultural institution in the province. Its new permanent exhibition, W8banakiak, offers an immersive and contemporary experience that bridges past, present, and future through stories, traditions, values, and the resilience of the Abenaki people. Heritage objects, works of art, multimedia installations, and personal testimonies come together to present a living and evolving culture. Open to all generations, the Musée des Abénakis also offers a rich educational program, temporary exhibitions highlighting Indigenous artists from many Nations, and community activities that encourage dialogue and intercultural understanding. Every project is guided by the values of authenticity, transmission, and excellence. More than a museum, the Musée des Abénakis is a living space where culture is shared, celebrated, and renewed. Visitors are invited to discover a Nation, listen to its stories, and take part in a living history deeply rooted in the land and looking toward the future.
