About the museum
Here, the power of the rapids has shaped 7,000 years of history, ingenuity and defense. Overlooking the river, the Coteau-du-Lac site shelters the remnants of the first fortified lock canal in Canada. The grounds offer a beautiful setting to relax, picnic and learn about the history of the fort and the military strategy of the time.
Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site is located about 50 km southwest of Montréal on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. This 7,000-year-old passageway features Canada’s first lock canal and the remains of a fort.
Wander through the archaeological grounds and imagine the lives of the soldiers in the early 19th century garrison. Admire the blockhouse that served as a command post.
