About the museum
In the downtown area and right by the bay, the Birthplace of Canada historical site offers a reconstitution of the heart of Gaspé as it was in the early 1900s!
Dive in the Great History of Gaspe!
Visit historic buildings and hear fascinating stories about the history of Gaspé. This is also where you will find the official monument commemorating the 400th anniversary of explorer Jacques Cartier’s arrival and his act of taking possession, in 1534, of the territory that would become New France. Heritage house, seaplane base, warehouse, naval base, general store, tavern... Accompanied by guides in period costume, step back in time during a visit to these historic buildings, which showcase a rich collection of artifacts. Take part in the multimedia show, Tale of Winds and Tides, a fascinating immersion in the history of Gaspé, from the Micmac presence to the present day. Participate in craft workshops and attend the many cultural and artistic events that take place on site from early summer to late fall. Come discover our boutique, which offers high-quality local crafts, Gaspé products, and other items bearing the Gaspé label. Finally, all that’s left to do is settle into our tavern’s terrace to relax in front of the view of the water or the sunset, with a drink and a snack in front of you. Welcome!
