About the museum

Just a few steps from the vibrant Jacques Cartier Place, discover the Victorian house of Sir George-Étienne-Cartier, one of the main architects of the Canadian Confederation. Immerse yourself in the customs and traditions of the 19th century Montreal bourgeoisie and discover, through play, the political work of this important figure in Canadian history.

The two adjoining houses will transport you between past and present, allowing you to explore the Canadian bourgeoisie and political history. In the West house, go back in time and discover the Montreal bourgeoisie of the 19th century. The cozy atmosphere and authentic objects allow you to appreciate the values of the time. In the East House, browse through stimulating and renewed exhibitions that foster civic and social reflection. Confront your modern vision with the alliances and compromises created by the actors of the time in the exhibition "State of Play". Share your vision of a dream country in the exhibition "Imagine a Country" and become an agent of change. Admire the surtout, an exceptional solid silver centrepiece that bears witness to the great moments in the life of George-Étienne-Cartier.
