Component Part Names (Identification)

Field to be used with an authority listField used for ethnology and history collectionsField used for fine and decorative arts collectionsField used for science and technology collectionsField used for archaeology collections (object data and site data)Société des musées québécois Info-Muse database field

Definition:

  • This field contains the names of the removable parts of the object.

Observations:

  1. N.B.: Do not confuse the Object Name and Component Part Names fields. Objects are entities that may or may not have component parts. A piece that can be displayed by itself is an object; use the Object Name field. An element whose primary purpose is to complete the object it belongs to is a component part; use the Component Part Names field.
    Example

Record for a box and its cover

      Object Namebox
      Quantity 1
    Component Part Names box; cover
      Number of Components 2
  2. This field is used in conjunction with the Number of Components field.

Entry rules:

  1. When an object consists of several elements, enter the name of each component part and separate each with a semicolon followed by a space. If several of the elements have the same name, enter this name in the singular, even if there is more than one, followed by a space and the total number between parentheses.
    Example 1

    Record for a cart wheel

      Object Namecart wheel
     Quantity 1
Component Part Names wheel; axle; spoke (8)
      Number of Components 10

Component Part Names chess board; pawn (16); king (2); bishop (4); knight (4); castle (4); queen (2)
      Number of Components 33
  2. When all the components of an object have the same name, it is not necessary to enter the number in parentheses.
    Example

    A cane comprising three sections

      Object Name cane
     Quantity 1
    Component Part Namessection
      Number of Components 3
  3. If you are unsure whether your information is correct, include a space and a question mark after the word.
