Collecting Method (Collection)

Field to be used with an authority listField used for natural science collections

Definition:

  • This field describes the way the specimen was harvested, collected, captured or sampled.

Observations:

  1. For biological sciences: the method of capture, sampling, salvage, harvest or collection.
  2. For Earth sciences: the method of collection or sampling.
  3. For better search results in your database, avoid a large variety of terms; draw up an authority list and add keywords as necessary. The following are some examples of keywords you may use:

    accidentally killed
    commercial fishing
    extracted after dynamiting site
    extracted by drilling
    fell
    found
    hunted
    road kill
    trapped
    windowkill
  4. N.B.: Use this field only when the collecting method is different from the acquisition mode.
    Example

    A bay-breasted warbler was purchased from a dealer, who said that the bird died after striking a window.

Entry rules:

  1. Enter a keyword describing the method used to obtain the specimen.
    Example

      Disciplinemammalogy

  2. This field may not contain more than one entry.
