Variety (Taxonomy)

Definition:

  • This field contains the scientific name of the variety, for biological specimens, or the English name of the variety, for mineralogical specimens.

Observations:

  1. For biological sciences: Enter the scientific name of the variety to which the specimen has been assigned.
    Example

  2. For Earth sciences: Identify the variety of the specimen using the normal criteria (colour, chemical properties, etc.) and enter the English name in the field.
    Example

      Discipline mineralogy
      Species quartz
    Varietysmoky
  3. For better search results in your database, avoid a large variety of terms; draw up an authority list and add names as necessary.

Entry rules:

  1. Enter the full name; do not use abbreviations.
    Example

      Discipline mycology
      Genus Amanita
      Species vaginata
    Variety alba
  2. In accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature, the first letter of the taxon is lower case.
    Example

      Disciplinebotany
      GenusPyrola
      Speciessecunda
    Varietyobtusata
  3. Do not enter the word "variety" before the name of the variety.
    Example

    Variety molis
     and not 
     Variety variety molis
  4. If the specimen includes more than one variety, enter each of them, followed by a semicolon and a space.
    Example

      Discipline mineralogy
      Speciestennantite
    Varietysanbergerite; zinciferous
  5. If you are unsure whether your information is correct, include a space and a question mark after the name.
  6. If the biological specimen belongs to an unidentified variety, enter "var" in the Variety field.
    Example

      Disciplinebotany
     Family Leguminosae
      Genus Oxytropis
      Species campestris
    Variety var
