User (Origin)

Definition:

  • This field contains the name or company name of the user of the object.

Observation:

  • The user corresponds to the name of the public or private organization that used the object, or of the person who used it.

Entry rules:

  1. Enter the name of the organization or company, without inverting it.
    Example

    User Compagnie Rolland
     and not 
     User Rolland, Compagnie
  2. Enter the name of the company as it was officially known when the object was used. Enter the acronym if it is the name the company is best known by, followed by the full name in parentheses.
    Example

    User IBM (International Business Machines)
  3. Do not use your own translation when you enter the name of a company.
    Example

    User Banque nationale de Paris
     and not 
     User National Bank of Paris
  4. When the name of the company exists in several languages, including English or French, enter the name of the user in the language used to document your collections, regardless of what is marked on the object.
    Example

    User Canadian General Electric Company Limited
     and not 
     User La compagnie Générale Électrique du Canada limitée
  5. When the user is a person, enter the family name, comma, space and first name.
    Example

    UserLefebvre, Pierre-Paul
  6. Initials should be followed by periods.
    Example

    UserMacDonald, Georges L.
  7. Periods and commas should be followed by a space, unless they are followed by other punctuation.
    Example

    User Roy, C. A.; Péloquin, Louise
  8. If an individual has an honorific title, enter his or her family name, comma, space, first name, comma, space and the title.
    Example

    UserBilodeau, Michel, doctor
  9. If you are unsure whether your information is correct, include a space and a question mark after the user's name.
  10. This field may contain multiple entries separated by a semicolon followed by a space. The list should begin with the most recent user.
    Example

    A meter was used by Southern Canada Power from May 12, 1958 to September 23, 1964 and then by Shawinigan Water and Power from September 24, 1964 to December 6, 1966
